"It's Not About the Frog" (SEPs...how do we spiral these throughout the school year))
Thursday August 1, 2024 8:00am - 8:50am CDT
During this interactive and hands-on session, teachers will have the opportunity to practice the SEPs (our process skills) during a frog dissection lab. How are we engaging students with labs without losing our minds? During this session, we will model how you can shift Your focus to lab safety and the other SEPS, still while teaching content, during a lab. Hence the title, "It's Not About the Frog". It's more about students becoming and thinking like scientists, while being safe. We will share how we create a dissection lab setting that is organized, fun, easy to clean up, and allows ALL learners to feel successful! Yes of course, we want students to compare the anatomy of the frog to that of a human, but we also want them to practice lab safety and understand the importance of the basic science process skills. We also hope to provide time for teachers to plan or share how they can embed the SEPs in a lesson of their choice. Frog dissection lab set up, completion of the dissection, and cleaning up afterwards will be modeled.

Building Thinking Classrooms in Elementary Math Toolkit #1
Thursday August 1, 2024 8:00am - 10:50am CDT
Do you strive to help students go beyond rote memorization and repetitive calculations? Many traditional classroom norms and habits actually enable “non-thinking” student behavior. In this session, we'll set the stage for transforming Your classroom into one focused on learning-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning.

Additional Information: This session is the first in a series of workshops designed to introduce participants to the 14 teaching practices for enhancing learning outlined in Peter Liljedahl’s book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. He recommends a gradual implementation of the practices, so that’s how this series is designed.

Incorporating Document-Based Skills and Strategies within Daily Instruction
Thursday August 1, 2024 12:00pm - 2:50pm CDT
Looking for ways to utilize the resources and skills embedded in a DBQ? Looking for ways to incorporate more writing into your daily social studies lessons? Document-based questions (DBQs) are often used as a way to access a student’s historical and analytical thinking skills and argumentative writing abilities. But, DBQs can also be used to teach those skills in a student-centered approach. "DBQ-In-A-Day" will focus on ways to utilize bits-and-pieces of a DBQ unit in short one- or two-day lessons. The training will feature various strategies to help students with document analysis and increase writing skills through "DBQ Quick Writes." The goal is for participants to leave with a better sense of how they can utilize the DBQ resources beyond full units, worksheet packets and within their daily instruction.
