Students have many different layers to their identity which translate to a preconceived notion of their ability to be successful in “math” (whatever that is).The messaging students get from culture tells a lot of students they are not mathematicians based on their gender, race, age, or other aspects of their identity. In this session, I will share with you how I expanded my students’ understanding of what it means to be a mathematician, and what it means to do math, and use what I learned to empower the multiple identities of my students.
